Happy New Year!

One thing that I try to do for Eleanor each year is to give her one “big” gift and then fill in with little wants and necessities. Every gift doesn’t necessarily have to be a toy, and the big gift doesn’t necessarily have to be big (big can mean literally big, or just a pricier item that she wants). Last year she got an art easel for her big gift, and it was only $20 from Ikea; however, this year her big gift is big in every sense of the word (lol). She’s been wanting this ice-cream truck for her My Generation Doll (a much more affordable version of the American Girl Dolls), and this year I finally caved. Now I’ll grab several more things from her “want” list, but I also plan to add in some things that she needs too! Everything is a gift this time of year! Pajamas, a toothbrush and new underwear all make the gift pile around here.
Read moreWhen we first moved into this house, we had just left an updated (ish) 2007 built house for a 1983 fixer upper. So we’re missing features like windows on either side of our bed, and a tray ceiling in our master. In our new (older) house there are two windows in the bedroom, but they’re across the room from each other like a couple of maniacs! There is absolutely no centering the bed on any wall in this room at all. At first, I was beyond frustrated, but it really got my gears turning and forced me to be creative.
I really like to keep things simple when it comes to porch decor. I think that’s because I’m not really outdoorsy, and I’m terrified of critters and bugs getting all up in my space. It seems like if I keep things simple, there are no hiding places for snakes or anything. [I don’t know y’all, I’m weird, okay?!]
Read moreI grabbed this sweater from the Nordstrom Sale a couple of months ago, immediately fell in love and ordered the gray one too! It’s been sweltering hot here since it arrived, but I still wanted to style it several ways just to see how versatile it’d be for when the cooler temps actually roll around. Turns out, it’s as flexible a piece of clothing as I’d hoped, and now that I’ve already taken these photos, I can’t stop thinking of more ways that I’m going to be wearing this comfy thing!
Entryways are an important spot when it comes to your home. It’s the first thing that everyone sees when they walk in the door, [a first impression, if you will] and it’s more than likely the spot where everyone in your family kicks off their shoes and (depending on your climate and season of life) sheds a jacket or backpack. While I can appreciate a fully decorated space, I can also attest to the fact that we need our homes to be functional!
So for our entryway, I chose to incorporate a bench (for tying shoes) and a mirror for those last minute hair checks on the way out the door. We also needed hooks for my tote and Eleanor’s backpack. E quickly decided to use my purely decorative basket under the bench to house her shoes, and naturally, I added some decor to the bench.
I like the way that the woven light fixture ties in to the jute rug, bench and even the tiny basket. The wood from the hooks also pulls from the bench. You start seeing black on the front door, before you ever step foot inside the house, and then it’s repeated on the mirror, bigger basket and even the cord for the light fixture. (Tiny details matter!) For the photo, I added some greenery to the bench to pull from the wreath on the front door. I love how the pillow adds a pop of color to an otherwise neutral space.
Y’ALL, I can’t believe I’m even typing this right now…. but Society of Sumner is officially a website! A blog! Whatever you want to call it! Eeeeekkkk!!
When I switched my Instagram account to Society of Sumner, I never dreamed that I’d have any use for a blog. I just enjoyed sharing my home with y’all. But as my IG starting growing, so did my list of home decor projects, and I’m still getting questions about how we did our faux brick wall in the dining room of our last house (sorry, no DIY story or pictures for that lol). So with our new house being one big fixer upper, I really felt like having a place for all of our projects to live would be so fun! Now anytime anyone wants to refer back to a past project (or even shop our home), it’ll all be right here on the blog!
I seriously appreciate you guys so freaking much, and I’m so excited that you’re here!
