When we first moved into this house, we had just left an updated (ish) 2007 built house for a 1983 fixer upper. So we’re missing features like windows on either side of our bed, and a tray ceiling in our master. In our new (older) house there are two windows in the bedroom, but they’re across the room from each other like a couple of maniacs! There is absolutely no centering the bed on any wall in this room at all. At first, I was beyond frustrated, but it really got my gears turning and forced me to be creative.
First, we brought our rug into the room and somewhat centered it with the room. The next thing we did was set up our bed right on top of the rug. (If you’ve ever switched your bedroom rug, you know the importance of these two steps being in this order lol). We set up night stands and hung our curtains, just to get a feel for things, before I ever started putting holes in this wall.
Do you see that tiny basket that touches our bed up there? It’s the first thing I hung up. Random, right? Except it’s not. There was an outlet cover, with no outlets, right there touching our headboard, and I knew that covering it up was a must. That’s why I chose to do a basket wall over our bed in the first place! It felt like the only way to hide such a hideous intrusion was to be able to randomly [read strategically] place these baskets about the wall.
As soon as I got that outlet covered, I decided to start in the center. I hung the biggest basket right in the middle of the bed, and then worked my way across the wall to the left. Once I got started, it was obvious to me that I didn’t want any baskets over the right side of the bed. Instead of trying to pretend that the window wasn’t making everything off-centered, I decided to just play it up! I knew I wanted to hang something completely different over my side of the bed, and this ‘darling I love you’ scroll from Smallwood Home was the perfect piece.
I also like to mix things up a bit within the basket wall by adding a round mirror (keeping the theme round), a galvanized planter to incorporate greenery and of course my hat collection made the wall. (I just wear these hats straight off the wall, and put them back when I’m done).
I love how your eye starts at the window, moves left across the wall and then goes down to the nightstand. It all flows so nicely, in my opinion.
I don’t think I’ll be changing this wall up seasonally, but I do like to add accessories to bring color and/or texture to this space as the seasons change. I love all white bedding for spring and summer, but when fall and winter roll around, I always feel like I need to make it feel heavier and warmer somehow. (Does that even make sense?) I switched our white throw for a deeper toned throw blanket at the end of the bed, and brought in a fun pillow from the living room to pull the colors together. I also grabbed some amber jars from the kitchen and some darker greenery to add depth to Leslie’s nightstand.
Take a look below at how I styled the master bedroom in our last house, just for fun!
