TV Console DIY

My husband wanted a 65 inch tv that wasn’t a Samsung Frame TV …how rude!

We’re not really a TV family though.

He watches football in the Fall, and our kids are being raised by Disney Plus whenever I need to get things done around the house; but other than that, we hardly even turn the thing on.

So we decided on a compromise: he could get a 65 inch tv if we could find a beautiful piece of furniture to put underneath.

Plot twist: beautiful pieces of furniture made to actually be console tables are ridiculously expensive (and this was before the recent inflation) situation).

I shopped vintage and junk stores in hopes of finding something unique.

I shopped Tjmaxx and Home Goods in hopes of not blowing our budget.

Nothing. Zilch. Notta.

So one fine day, as I was scrolling the Target website, I stumbled upon this beautiful cabinet.

Fit to be a nightstand? Sure. A cute little storage cabinet? Also, yes. But a console for under our tv? Not quite big enough.

I closed out of my browser.

On with my day.

My mind would return, however, to that cute little cabinet throughout the day.

I’ll just get the measurements and double check.

Turns out, one was definitely too small, but two might work, and three would be a no brainer.

So I ordered a couple to test them out, since Target has a decent return policy. No harm in trying.

It worked! Two cabinets pushed up beside each other was slightly bigger than our 65 inch tv.

My only requirements for this piece were as follows: needs to be beautiful, needs to hold board games and gaming consoles and must be longer than the tv.

I like my console to be longer than the tv so that it can anchor the whole situation. The television does not get to be the star of the show, that I work so hard to make feel cozy!

We’ve since added a third cabinet, and I swear that tv of ours is getting smaller and smaller with each cabinet that we add.

Can I get a hallelujah?

How we did it: you might think we’re crazy, but I’m gonna let you in on a little fact about me, ready? I’m not a perfectionist. We shoved those cabinets right up next to each other and zip tied the back legs together. I didn’t need them to be perfect, I just needed them to stay together. Oh, and I didn’t want to screw or nail them together, because who knows, in the future they might be nightstands or end tables or something else.

Our house was built in the early 80’s, and I’m pretty sure that the majority of our windows were original to the house [we could feel a breeze coming through some of them 😂] — So we’ve been excited for this update!

Our other big updates haven’t been as fun, mostly just done out of necessity (HVAC, duct work, roof)

Slowly but surely bringing our sweet little house up to date 🏠

PS my new throw pillows are linked in stories and my October 🔗 highlight — swipe to the end of these slides to see them — I feel like the brown/mustard color kind of pulls from our rug. Can you see it?
